Captain MS Dhoni issued last warning to CSK bowlers during their match against Lucknow Super Giants. Although CSK got a thrilling win in their first match of the IPL 2023 by defeating LSG at home ground MA Chidambaram Stadium by 12 runs on 3rd April, captain MS Dhoni was seen furious on his bowlers on the field.
What actually happened?
During the match, the CSK bowlers conceded too many extra runs by giving 13 Wides, 3 No-balls and 2 leg-byes which totalled to 18 extra runs. Due to this, not only the over rate got slower but the chances of losing the match also increased for CSK.
This made captain MS Dhoni lose his cool and issue a strict warning to his bowlers on the field to issue no no-balls and wides at all. Though CSK won the match, but the winning captain had to mention in his post-match interview that no more extra runs could be afforded by CSK bowlers in the upcoming matches as it will lead to ban on his captaincy for the next match. If this happens, then the team will have to play under a new captain for the next match.
Has this happened before as well?
It is worth noting that MS Dhoni has already been issued a warning by BCCI during their previous match with Gujarat Titans (GT) as well when the CSK bowlers conceded 12 extra runs which included 4 Wides, 2 No-balls and 6 leg-byes.
What is BCCI’s Rule for banning a captain for slow over rate?
As per the BCCI rule, if a team has to be given a third warning for slow over rate, then the captain of the bowling will be fined Rs. 30 lakh and will also get banned for the next match.
In case captain MS Dhoni is banned, who is a better option for CSK captaincy?
As per Deep Das Gupta and Suresh Raina, former Indian cricketers, Ruturaj Gaikwad is best option for CSK captaincy. He has already played three season of IPL from Chennai Super Kings. Moreover, he is already an Orange Cap holder in the IPL Season 2021.
